Question ..... I just finished performing the 50 hour on my L3000DT and was wanting to change my fuel filter. How is this done without dumping diesel all over the garage. Will removing the filter cause the tank to drain?
Thanks for the help.

Most tanks do have a shut off valve on them. The biggest frustration is often filling a filter with fresh product so it doesn't have to dry crank to regain it's prime. They are or can be messy when changing. ....

It is a very poorly designed system and can try your patience if you don't prefill the fuel filter with CLEAN fuel PRIOR to installing it. Purging the fuel line of air upto the injection pump PRIOR to the 1st start attempt helps out a lot too. Try the 1st start attempt with the throttle set to FULL but have your hand on the throttle ready to pull it back as (hopefully) soon as the engine catches a good start. If the engine fires right up and dies, you are hosed and expect to be cranking on it a bit or even purge the injector lines upto the fuel injectors. I have to do the same thing with my Cummins too. Really pisses me off that someone would design a fuel system like that.
This is one of the features that are VERY user friendly on the John Deere 4000 Ten Series tractors. They are automatic self fuel priming and do not require the above steps.
Good luck and may your curse words be few! :o) I would not change the filter at 50 hours unless you suspect it may be contaminated. Most are designed to go for about 200 hours. ....

Thanks guys. You have collectively talked me into waiting. I don't want to be "hosed" :)
BTW, there isn't a shutoff between the tank and filter so it ought to be fun once I decide to tackle it.
